In this period of examinations, there are times when you might be disappointed or discouraged by a tough paper. Or perhaps you have been trying hard for a particular subject, yet it seems that you keep hitting a wall and can't move forward. Some days you might even feel that you are being overwhelmed by a great sense of helplessness and hopelessness. I have been there and I want you to know that in God you CAN overcome. In times like these, remember that God is not far. He is here with you. Draw near to Him so that by His grace, mercy and power, you can overcome. As this song claims, "The same power that conquered the grave lives in me, Your love that rescued the earth lives in me". May this song lead you to draw near to our God who is our great overcomer. Do what You will, Lord

It's not always possible to fully understand why God allows us to go through certain journeys in life. Many times in these situations, it is so easy and tempting to look only at the negative and ask the big 3-word question, "WHY?" or in Singlish, "HUH?!!" And many times, it is too easy to allow ourselves to dwell obsessively on the hurt and the disappointment, thinking to ourselves that by somehow holding on to it, we are better able to make sense of what's happening and justify our suffering.

I've learnt that in such times, the best thing we can do for ourselves is to remember that God continues to be the good, perfect and loving God who is watching over us and directing our path. That is a truth that remains no matter where and how we are. In our desperation, let us cry out like this song says, "Take my heart, and make it new. Make it true and make it like you. Take my hands I lift them high, they're yours not mine. Do what you will."

Instead of surrendering to anger, bitterness and confusion, let us lift our hands in surrender to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. It is only in Him that we can find renewed hope to do what He wills. If you are in such a situation, I pray that this song will minister to you powerfully. Just What Are You Shouting About?

"Now, singing Shout to the Lord, once again, your American Idols..." First thing that went through my mind when I heard that was, "Wah, must be some black mama gospel song." And then the into came and my ears perked up! Now that's a really familiar tune! In case you are still wondering, YES YES YES! Last week's American Idol closed with the contestants singing Darlene Zschech's Shout to the Lord! It was incredible hearing it on national TV. I told my dad, that's probably the only time you will hear a worship song being broadcast over Singapore national TV.

Rare as it might be, I couldn't help but marvel as these words were blasted out "Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing. Power and majesty, praise to the King!" Imagine the number of homes that this program broadcasts to. It was like an international declaration of praise to Jesus! Wow! A few things crossed my mind at that instance. Imagine a day when we could go to singing competitions and belt out our favourite hymn or praise song and wow the judges without anyone (namely Simon Cowell) calling it indulgent. I do believe that's what we call culture transformation and I do hope I can see that in my lifetime... [+]

Looking at the contestants, I wondered too how many of them meant what they sang the way they did with their individual performances. I realised that to most of them, this might have just been a new song for them to learn and perform during the results show. Is Jesus truly their Lord? Is He really their tower of refuge and strength? Is He yours? We do that sometimes too, don't we? Learn a new song and perform it on Sundays. I'm guilty of it myself. There are days when my mind is just so distracted that corporate worship turns into a vocal exercise.

Last Sunday was kind of that way. With the anxiety of finishing my thesis project deeply stuck like chewing gum in my mind, it was an uphill climb trying to mean what I sang. Times like that, even the deeply moving scenes of the Passion of Christ lose their impact. So I prayed. Actually, I prayed for the person beside me, whom the Lord showed me was feeling the same way. I knew each word that I blessed him with was a word meant for my own heart. And that prayer was all I needed to experience a breakthrough. It's strange how God works isn't it?

So what am I saying? We were made to worship God. That's our primary calling! To give Him praise and worship. But to fully appreciate that, we need to be intentional with out choices. Choose to worship Him. Choose to focus on Him. Choose to depend on Him. Choose to obey Him. Despite your circumstances or emotional feelings. That is going to be the crucial difference between an American Idol singing " Shout to the Lord" and you, a child of God bringing a smile to Jesus' face. Indeed, nothing compares to the promise we have in Him.

I'd rather have Jesus. What about you?

Last week, Ps Melvin taught us a new song at the closing of his sermon. He sang "I'd Rather Have Jesus", an old hymn with lyrics that really touched my heart. May the words of the song minister to you and cause you to reflect on the direction of your own life as you prepare for Sanctification Week over the next few days. I’d Rather Have Jesus is a song written by Rhea F. Miller with the tune written by George Beverly Shea. This poem, written in 1922, was left on a piano in the Shea home by Bev Shea who wanted her son to find it and change the course of his life.

The words, I’d rather have Jesus, moved George so much and spoke to him about his own aims and ambitions in life. He sat down at the piano and began singing them with a tune that seemed to fit the words. Shea’s mom heard him singing it and asked him to sing it at church the next day.

George’s life direction did change. He was offered a popular music career with NBC, but a few years later chose to become associated with evangelist Billy Graham and sang this hymn around the world.

Psalm 27

Pastor Melvyn talked about dwelling in the house of God last week, to live constantly in His presence. God certainly desires that for us, but for most of us, I suspect it can easily become a chore rather than a delight. Why is that so? I believe we simply don't trust God enough. We are easily distracted by our daily work responsibilities and the things that give us pleasure. We forget that we were created for His pleasure. Not ours. We forget that God Almighty is worthy of our trust and our dependence.

Today in Psalm 27, the Psalmist tells the Lord, "If there is one thing I ask of the Lord, one thing that I seek, is that I may dwell in the House of the Lord forever (paraphrased)." David knew, that was the best thing he could ever do for himself. The house of God was his refuge, a place of unparalleled comfort and he took great effort (seek) to be in the presence of the Almighty. He knew what it meant to depend on God, and to draw strength from Him.

Today, let's dare to draw near to God again. Don't shortchange yourself by thinking you have the better solution or that you know better. How can we ever know better than God our creator? May this song bless your heart and encourage you to delight in the presence of God. It is there you will find your deepest satisfaction. Selah.

For those of you serving in the choir this week, you would have been notified that there is a new song you have to learn - Show Me How To Live. This song has ministered to be very much because it expresses the heart of a person who desires to be more Christ-like in every part of his life.

In a time where it is all too common to live life our own way, doing the things that we are comfortable doing and trusting in the confidence of our human abilities, this song reminds me to ask God, "SHOW ME HOW TO LIVE! The Story of His Amazing Grace

"The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
The sun forbear to shine
But God who called me here below
Will be for ever mine"

These are the words from the last verse of John Newton's poem that became the famous hymn Amazing Grace. The one that we know more familiarly - "When we've been there ten thousand years..." is actually a change to the song made in 1909. Edwin Excell, a composer of hymns replaced it with a verse from the hymn "Jerusalem, My Happy Home."

How this last stanza is once again featured back in the song is another interesting story to be told. Chirs Tomlin was approached by a friend who was working on the film "Amazing Grace" to do something for the show. The film itself is based on the real-life story of William Wilberforce who as a Member of Parliament, navigated the world of 18th Century backroom politics to end the slave trade in the British Empire. As Chris thought about what to do with a precious song that was already a classic in itself, the Lord led him to write the extra refrain - "My chains are gone, I've been set free..." Hear it for yourself below. [...]

More on the life on John Newton. Though he started out as a captain of a slave trading ship, the Lord came to him one day and he gave his life to Christ, finally, becoming a clergyman (a minister of Christ). It was during this time that he constantly encouraged William Wilberforce in his push to put an end to the slave trade. Watch this to find out more.

What really touched me about this entire story was how the Lord's redemptive purpose for John Newton's life shown through as God used the former slave trader to be an encourager to the person who would subsequently be instrumental in bringing an end to the British slave trade in 1807. As I read more about the history of John Newton and William Wilberforce, I could not but stand amazed before our God who orchestrated the freedom of his people. Indeed, we are greatly blessed to be found within His Amazing Grace. Be blessed by the song.

Amazing Grace indeed

Last Sunday, we sang an old hymn - Amazing Grace at youth service. Well, it is not technically the original hymn since the version you sang was a revised one done by Chris Tomlin. Still, many of you felt that it was meaningful and ministering. I personally like hymns because many of them were inspired by times of great difficulties where their composers saw the abundant grace and great sufficiency of the Lord shine through for them despite their desperate circumstances. They are a legacy of great testimonies of hope and victory in Christ. May you be uplifted by this video which tells a little more of the history of His Amazing Grace. I'm sure you will sing this hymn with greater appreciation of God's grace for your life the next time. Be blessed.

When I was younger in Sunday School, I have heard and sang some of them. But currently, I cant remember any of it.

However, I came across this Tamil movie ( Minsara Kanavu ) and in it had a beautiful Tamil Christian Song. It brings Praises to our Lord Jesus Christ. This song touched my heart in a special way.

Because of one lady, an anointed worship leader was born.

Remember pastor once shared about how each small thing we do could lead to a great man of God rising up? Here is Israel Houghton's testimony. Above is one of his songs that is simple, yet so full of gratitude for the Lord.

I come from a cross-cultural background, which is a nice way of saying that my father was black and my mother is white. My mother became pregnant at the age of 17 in Waterloo, Iowa. Obviously, it was a bad situation during the early 70's in a small midwestern town. Her parents gave her two choices: either have a back-alley abortion or be disowned by her family. Thank God she chose the latter. Ultimately, she was disowned and abandoned by my biological father.

She ended up moving to San Diego, California. Picture this. It was 1971 and my mother was 8 months pregnant, all alone, thousands of miles from home, and forced to enter reality unprepared. Pretty bleak. (Read on...)

One day, while walking down the street, this lady pulled up to her in a Volkswagen Bug. The woman got out of her car and respectfully, yet boldly began to share the Gospel with my mom. Words of life and hope began to overtake the words of rejection and abandonment she had grown accustomed to. There on the street corner, she ended up on her knees where she cried out to God and committed her life to Jesus Christ. The lady gave my mother a Bible and she began reading at page one. My mother saw the name Israel all through it. That's how I got my name!

My mother eventually met and married my stepfather, who is really my dad, when I was one year old. We grew up in church because he went into full-time ministry as a pastor. You see, God had a plan from the very beginning!

I'm often asked by skeptics why I'm as passionate about worshiping God as I am. The answer is simple for me. In this age of disposable relationships, I could easily have become a statistic and, at best, a distant memory of a youthful mistake. Instead, a Sovereign God rescued my mother and me and gave us hope, a future and a testimony of the providence of God. The very least I can do is enter into His gates with thanksgiving, His courts with a passionate praise and eventually bow before His throne in intimate worship.

As far as leading worship goes (which is my passion and calling), I now realize that there have been demands put on me from every part of my experience since day one - culturally, emotionally, musically, and more. So things tend to sound cross-cultural, cross- denominational, and cross-generational. I like to call it, "The Sound of New Breed Worship." I tend to lead from an internal platform founded in Psalm 124:2, "If it had not been for the Lord who was on my side"....where in the world would I be?

In an age of disposable relationships, maybe we should be asking ourselves that question a lot more often. I am confident that we would worship with far more conviction, intensity, and overwhelmed gratitude if we did.

Today, Israel Houghton has garnered acclaim as one of Christian and Gospel music’s foremost worship leaders, songwriters, recording artists and producers.

This song speaks of the power and awe of Jesus. When I listen to it,it's so amazing. Jesus is so powerful and has won it all. Every single sin, every single evil, every wickedness, every transgression, everystronghold, every chain has been broken on the cross.

Sometimes the message is so simple and 'cliche' but as i reflect through the song, it brings much tears and thankfulness in my heart as i realize how difficult it is sometimes, to break out of the bondages of sin and yet Jesus say He has won it all and He has overcame all of them to set me free.

Music Wednesday - Just For Me (Paradise Live)

Last Sunday's sermon was on how we can prepare for the day of judgment. Just to recap:

1. Reject indifference - Stop the sin of omission
2. Reach out in identification - Seize every opportunity to do good
3. Rejoice in our inheritance - See what occupies God's heart

One thing from the sermon that struck me most is the humility of Jesus Christ, "who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped." (Phi 2:6) In fact when Ps Melvyn asked how Jesus looked like, I did not expect the answer to be "ugly". As I pondered over this revelation, I can't help but thank God for His grace and for the kenosis of Christ - "but emptied Himself...and being made in the likeness of men." (Phi 2:7) Christ has identified Himself with sinners - me and you - and from being the glory of glories in heaven, He humbled Himself to endure the cross, just for us. What amazing grace! The greatest condescension, Just For Me.

Music Wednesday : Complete (Parachute band)

I thank God for His Grace, Mercy and Cross. He carried me through the lowest points of my life. He comforted me. His touch made my vision clear. He embraced me like 'a mother carrying a crying child'. In His love, I was brave again. In my weakness, His strength pireced through like a rays out of a stormy sky. I offered my life and in return was freely offered a new begining. What is this Love, which i can't rationalize but feel? Why is that you choose me, oh Lord? What have i done to deserve such love!

I love you just because I love you (God says).



God used this song to speak to me when I was a new-believer. In each of my disappoinments, God made an appointment with me. I was going through the hardest period of my life where God intervened and changed my life. It was this song that blessed my heart through it all.

Music Wednesday : For Future Generations

For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Gal 2: 18-20

Have you wonder what you are living for. Perhaps it took kind of long..but i discovered this...i need to live for the next generation. Like how Israelites passed down the Law of God from generations to generations. The song below was used during the "Day of His Power" @ indoor stadium. It touched me deeply. God seem to be asking me "Will Singapore see a generation that does not know God at all?" It can happen, our worst fears can happen, if thsoe in the age of 26-35 do not stand up and impact the next generation. I need to open a new chapter in my life. Need to die more so that as we live for Christ, the generations that arise will come to know the one and only truth, way and life - Jesus Christ

I pray too that in my songs, in my singing, that i may glorify Him this way. To sing forth the light, to declare His Victory, to sing of a Savior, to proclaim a Redeemer. To raise my voice, strain myself heavenwards, to live for Christ, to impact the future generations.

Music Wednesday : God Be Merciful To Me

Just felt like sharing this song because it’s actually taken from a Psalter, and like songs of that era it’s got a lot of meaning in the words. I think it’s worth sharing because I’ve never seen a Psalter before (I’ve seen a hymnal, does that count?), but there’s a wealth of godly knowledge and emotion in songs like these.

In fact, if you turn to Psa 51: 1-11, you’ll find that it’s a very faithful rewriting of the text there. It also serves as a reminder that these were the worship songs of David; they were his devotions, so meaningful that they became part of the Word. It’s really making me check the authenticity of my quiet time. I hope it does something for you too.

This is one of my favourite christian contemporary singers. He writes the most beautiful and uplifting lyrics and his music paints such wonderful pictures you could almost imagine them coming to life in your head.
